Are they fearing the many changes but thinking “who” and not “what” is causing the problem? What if we speak to the person’s feelings? (“You sound really upset. Listen to what each person is really saying. Food banks, gofundme’s, and much more show how many of us are into helping, not harming and we have more in common with each other than otherwise. Two towns lose a thousand houses to the Marshall Fire, and people rush to donate money, food and assistance. Children fall through the ice, and people nearby risk their lives to rescue them. What is going wrong can distract us from what could be going right. Floods, fires, droughts and wars are topped off by the mutating COVID-19 virus, with hospitals full and schools and businesses emptying. This mood is reinforced by the violence around us, shootings, arson, vandalism, churches, buildings, vehicles deliberately destroyed. Many opinions sound angry, demonizing and dismissive of anyone who disagrees with the caller. Reading the RH Line might convince us that our country is more divided and fearsome than united. Let’s take that good news for what it’s worth. There’s a clear path to improvement in communications within the department and with the public. Jensen Hughes gave recommendations for improvement, but they couldn’t seem to come up with any obvious red flags. Was she secretly hoping for some big bad news to grab onto? On the community level, is the “heads must roll” and “burn it down” crowd willing to accept the results of this investigation? It sounds like our police department has many good things going for it, especially compared to most departments in similar-sized cities. Mayor Marsh asked the Jensen Hughes consultants if there is a culture within the PD that condones use of force. If we’re willing to hear it, there’s plenty of good news to work with. That’s what I wondered as I listened to the City Council’s study session with Jensen Hughes, the third party brought in to investigate the culture and practices of our police department. It really is more fun to have eliminated most of the negativity, and to be more loving. While teaching, my motto became “If it isn’t fun don’t do it.” And then I would figure out how to make it fun - maybe just at doing it at a different time or in a different way. We attract to ourselves a person who will help us learn a lesson, often in marriage. Just when I thought I had it learned, God would put someone or something in front of me as if to say, “Yeah, do you love this person or situation?” My reply was always, “No, Lord, I still have more to learn.” Am I still learning?
